Creating Safety
Whilst facilitating arts-based workshops, it is imperative that a responsible approach to the safety of all children and young people is adhered to at all times and that a safe, supportive and positive environment is created so that young people can participate in the arts for emotional wellbeing. The Expressive Arts has adapted its safety ethos from guidelines presented in the document ‘Creating Safety – child protection guidelines for the arts’ published by The Scottish Arts Council in conjunction with Children in Scotland.
• Best interests of the child or young person is primary consideration. At all times the best interests of the child or young person will be adopted, with a high degree of awareness and mindfulness of behaviour, language and tone of voice used during all interactions.
• Dignity and Respect of the child or young person is also of primary concern. Each child will be treated with dignity, respect and fairness. During all interactive work, each child or young person will be given the opportunity to participate equally and fairly in all activities, being positively encouraged at every opportunity.
• Personal Safety of the child or young person will be adopted in all personal interactions and with any equipment used in the work conducted by The Expressive Arts.
• Self Expression of the child or young person is at the heart of all interactions. A safe, supportive and positive environment will be adopted to ensure that all views of the child or young person can be openly expressed and explored.
The Expressive Arts recognises the importance of working with children and young people to help develop a confident and healthy Scotland.
