Promoting Health and Wellbeing for children and young people

The Expressive Arts – for schools

“Mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of young people are essential preconditions
for successful learning. These qualities cannot be developed for individuals in
isolation from health and wellbeing of the school community as a whole.”
(The Journey to Excellence, HMIe 2006).

Under the Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007, Health promotion should have a central and continuing focus in education.

Good mental and emotional health is a fundamental and underpinning component of positive health and wellbeing. The Curriculum for Excellence advises that a whole school approach to improving mental and emotional wellbeing will have an impact on all aspects of school life and benefit all who learn and work in schools, as well as providing a supportive environment for those who are experiencing difficulties (Curriculum for Excellence – Health and Wellbeing outcomes).

Through its positive health and wellbeing approach, The Expressive Arts has developed a program that promotes emotional wellbeing for children and young people in Scotland. The Harp workshops offered, link and promote the Arts, Scottish Culture and specific Health promoting practices for children and young people in Scotland.

The workshops are held on the school premises during school hours and can be offered to all classes. For the purpose of supervision, reflective practices and obtaining education value for the children after the workshop, the class teacher is required to attend the workshop with the class.

The workshops are arranged around the schools requirements and are usually held over 2 days, depending on the size of the school.
